Academics:
CKLA This week was busy! We selected projects and have begun research and planning for our 5 paragraph essays. We also completed a lab on the Rock Cycle with Starbursts. Please ask your child about what happens throughout this process. Next week we will take a look at erosion, deposition, and hydrothermal vents. Remember, project presentations are due on Friday, February 6th. Guidelines are attached below. Please ask your child: How is a sedimentary rock formed? (sediment is cemented together with immense amounts of pressure to form a rock). What rock is also called volcanic glass? (obsidian) What is erosion?
Math: We have entered into the wonderful world of fractions! Mrs. Minnie made her famous Baylor Quiche for us to use as a delicious model. Your child should understand that fractions are equal pieces of a whole, they should be able to identify the numerator and denominator, and be working to understand equivalent fractions .
I would ask for your assistance with this unit. When I was little, my mom took away the one cup measure in our house and made me figure out how to bake various items without it using the 1/4, 1/3 and 1/2 cup. While I thought this was extremely mean and abusive, it turns out it really helped me learn about equivalent fractions. If you have time, patience, and want to try this, it will greatly increase your student's understanding.
Grammar: We are adding conjunctions to our grammar arsenal. We will continue to practice possessive pronoun adjectives, work on mastering subject pronouns and review the realm of "You Understood".
